National Apprenticeship Week 2024: Electrical Apprentice

To mark National Apprenticeship Week, we wanted to continue our spotlight series by shining some light on our apprentice Matthew.

To let you get to know Matthew and his apprenticeship experience, we asked him a few questions...

Tell us about you and your apprenticeship?

My name is Matthew, and I am an Electrical Apprentice at Harvey Group. During my apprenticeship I have had the opportunity to work on many different projects, in a variety of sectors, ranging from educational buildings, industrial office buildings and pharmaceutical warehouses. This diverse range of projects has given me a broad understanding of different aspects of the trade and has allowed me to work on 1st fixing, 2nd fixing, testing and inspection.

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

I decided to do an apprenticeship in electrics because it provided me with the opportunity to learn while working – meaning, first-hand experience within the trade while being paid to learn!

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?

The part of my electrical apprenticeship I enjoy most is the testing aspect. Testing has allowed me to find faults and thus, pinpoint where they have occurred. I then problem solve and implement the knowledge I have gained while working with Harvey Group to rectify the issue.

Do you have any advice for anyone out there considering an apprenticeship?

My advice for anyone considering doing an apprenticeship would be to take every day as a new day to learn within the industry they are passionate about. I would also say to always ask questions, as asking more experienced colleagues can be a really effective way to learn and progress in your role!
